Today the Landmarks Preservation Commission will hear proposals from Hermès of Paris to renovate a historic structure at 706 Madison Avenue in Manhattan’s Upper East Side Historic District. Built in 1921, the five-story Neo-Federal style building comprises approximately 40,000 square feet and includes two outdoor terraces. The scope of renovation includes the replacement of existing windows, doors, and metal railings.

New additions include a Napoleonic equestrian statue on the roof, unlit nominative signage, and a rooftop HVAC system that is shrouded in ornamental foliage. The architects have also proposed a large overhead skylight system to create an elevated retail experience.

The new doors would incorporate one-half-inch thick glass that is raised and beveled within metal framing. Proposed changes to the existing windows include glass, black steel mullions and framing to match existing conditions, and removal of wooden frames.

Interior renovations to repurpose the floor space for retail use have been filed under a separate application.

With the help of New York design studio Spacesmith, the new Hermès flagship could open as early as 2022. According to reports, the retailer has already signed a lease for the location. The building sits vacant in its current condition.

  1. Would it have killed you to include the actual street that 706 Madison is on?..A useful piece of information.

  2. As anachronistic a brand as France has become as a country in the modern world.

A memory archive of its own self.

  3. Interesting that Hermes is planning a major renovation, during a global pandemic, and as retail stores are closing daily! I wonder what will be left by 2022, when it opens?

I believe that there are currently quite a few equestrian statues avaliable. Probably a a steep discount.

they are planning for the future and a pandemic does not last forever, in fact if the president did a good job the virus would be flatten by now and we would be slowly getting back on track and the work on these kind of renovation takes a year or more to complete with the potential yet things would be better and dont forget that the rich in bad or good times gets richer and only the poor rely suffer.
