Skyline Tower’s Façade Wrapping Up as Exterior Hoist Comes Down, in Long Island City

Exterior work has reached the final stages on Long Island City‘s Skyline Tower, the tallest building in Queens and the outer boroughs and number 16 on our annual construction countdown. Located at 23-15 44th Drive, the 68-story, 778-foot-tall residential skyscraper is designed by Hill West Architects and developed by United Construction & Development Group, FSA Capital, and Risland US Holdings LLC, and is expected to cost $1 billion. Modern Spaces is the exclusive marketing and sales agency for the 802 residences, which are designed by Whitehall Interiors.

Recent photos show the degree of progress since our last update in early August. The crown, which had long stood framed out but unclad, has since been fully enclosed, and the disassembly of the exterior hoist has begun. Work has yet to begin on filling in the gaps in the façade on the western elevation where it was once attached.

Meanwhile, at street level, the ground-floor entrance at the corner of 23rd Street and 44th Drive is shaping up. A large cantilevering canopy made of steel will hang over the sidewalk and front doors. So far the construction barriers, fences, and gates still surround the perimeter.

A closer look at the crown shows it clad in very thin, narrowly spaced louvers that wrap around the mechanical extensions with elegantly curved corners. Skyline Tower’s position on the western edge of Long Island City makes it prominently visible from a host of vantage points across New York City, and will provide residents with unobstructed vistas of all of Manhattan.

Skyline Tower’s residential units will be available for $500,000 to $4 million. The closest subways to the site are 7, G, E, M, N, R, and W trains, all located at the nearby Court Square and Court Square-23rd Street stations. The Manhattan-bound roadways of the Queensboro Bridge are also a short drive from the property, as is the Queens Midtown Tunnel via 21st Street.

YIMBY estimates that Skyline Tower will be fully completed within the first half of 2021.

  1. Skyline Tower isn’t really the most interesting building in the City, but I do like its crown. The building also looks very clean and I like the little terraces on the corners. So, I don’t really think Skyline Tower is all that bad. By the way, I do want to say that I’m very sad to see the CitiBank Tower become the Altice Tower. It won’t ever be the same…

    Elegant Yuanda building.

  3. For a glass box, I like it. The framed window panels give the facade a muscular distinctive appearance.
