The Union Theological Seminary is working with architect Beyer Blinder Belle to complete accessibility upgrades to the historic campus in Morningside Heights, Manhattan. Scope of work in this phase of renovation focuses on entryways into the Brown Memorial Tower, a landmarked structure at the southeast corner of the campus.

Located at 3041 Broadway, the tower sits at the corner of Broadway and 120th Street and was completed around 1910. The structure is considered by many to be among the finest examples of the English Perpendicular Gothic architecture in New York.

Proposed alterations include an accessibility ramp, a sloped granite wall with bronze pin-mounted signage and the seminary seal, illuminated handrails, and a raised stone landing. Ornamental upgrades include a new planting beds and a pendant light above the existing doors.

The structure’s historic designation requires the project team to seek approvals from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. A public hearing is scheduled for June 1. It is not clear when the project might begin nor the duration of construction.

  1. UTS let this gorgeous campus go to pot. Columbia should buy it and take it over.

  2. This campus id so beautiful. I hope they renovate and restore the structures.

Unfortunately the campus will be marred by the grossly oversized skyscraper they are allowing to be built in the middle of it, which will be clad with Disney like “faux brick and stone” panels. Very sad to see.
