Northwell Health this week broke ground at 1345 Third Avenue, the site of a 15-story medical pavilion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Located near the corner of 76th Street, the 200,000-square-foot facility will offer specialized cancer care services, imaging and lab testing, acute and chronic disease management, social work services, and more.

To complete the project, Northwell Health partnered with The University Financing Foundation (TUFF). The facility will provide care for numerous cancer types including breast, gastrointestinal, colorectal, gynecologic oncology, head and neck, neurosurgery, and thoracic. Surgery and inpatient care in Manhattan will continue to be provided by other Northwell hospitals, including neighboring Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital.

“As we break ground on this new specialized center, we are also breaking ground on a much more efficient and innovative way to take care of our patients,” said Northwell Health Cancer Institute physician-in-chief and director of cancer Richard Barakat, MD. “With this singular location for Northwell cancer care, our team of medical specialists can work together under the same roof, and bring new multidisciplinary approaches to care in a more efficient way.”

Prior to demolition, the site was occupied by six partially vacant mixed-use buildings. In 2018, CGA Mortgage Capital lent the developers $246 million to finance the acquisition and eventually demolish the buildings.

Total project costs are estimated at $450 million. The facility is expected to debut in fall 2025.

  1. A nice addition to the Upper East Side.

  2. The East side is already loaded with medical centers. This is only a block away from Lenox Hill and only about ten blocks from New York Hospital and Memorial.
