A proposal has been submitted to the NYC LPC for the restoration and enhancement of the Harlem River Houses, a historic public housing complex in Harlem, Manhattan. The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is working in collaboration with various artists to restore existing sculptures, introduce new public artwork, and install signage throughout the complex that spans from West 151st Street to West 153rd Street between Macombs Place and the Harlem River Drive.

Originally constructed in 1937, the Harlem River Houses feature historic sculptures by Heinz Warneke, including Mother and Child with Dog, Two Bear Cubs, and Black Laborer, for which the proposal has outlined conservation efforts. In addition to preserving these works, plans include the addition of new sculptures by artist Kim Dacres near the Harlem River Houses central fountain, as well as murals by muralists Paul Deo and Marthalicia Matarrita in breezeways along 151st and 153rd Streets. Signage will be installed to provide historical context and details about the site’s artistic and cultural significance.

The restoration effort extends to architectural features including breezeways, the central fountain, and other communal spaces. The proposal outlines plans to add murals to the breezeways at 151st and 153rd Streets. The designs for these murals and for new sculptures are currently being finalized.

Transit nearby the Harlem River Houses includes the 155th Street station, served by the B and D trains, and the 148th Street-Lenox Terminal station, serviced by the 3 train.

The plans are set to be reviewed on March 11.

  1. The best looking NYCHA buildings by far. The casement windows greatly improve the facade
