Excavation has begun at 14 White Street, the site of a seven-story residential building in the Tribeca East Historic District. Designed in collaboration between NAVA and DXA Studios and developed by 14 White Street Property Owner LLC, the 30,000-square-foot structure will yield ten condominium units ranging from 1,200-square-foot two-bedroom homes to four-bedroom layouts spanning 4,000 square feet. Central is the general contractor for the property, which is bound by White Street to the south and Sixth Avenue to the east.

Recent photos show the plot surrounded by green construction fencing and an excavator in action tearing up the asphalt surface. 14 White Street will eventually cover up the red party wall of the adjacent structure to the west while slightly eclipsing its roof height.

Renderings show a design evocative of the neighborhood’s industrial past, featuring etched bronze panels framing a grid of floor-to-ceiling windows. The façade panels’ angular shape offers a contemporary take on the columns characteristic of Tribeca’s many cast iron buildings, and are adorned with a diamond stitching pattern.

Floors two through five are planned to accommodate two units per level, while floors six and seven will feature full-floor units, including one penthouse with private outdoor space. A separate communal outdoor space will be located on the rooftop. Retail space is slated to span 3,000 square feet on the ground floor and cellar.

14 White Street is being designed as an ultra-efficient passive building and has an anticipated completion date of March 2024.

Everything about this project is wonderful. It heals the empty space, it nods to the historic neighborhood but embraces the future, and it IS the future by being built to passive standards. Truly remarkable.

  2. There’s a garage door for cars and only 10 units for all this space. Developers are turning Manhattan into the suburbs. Density is the reason why manhattan is so special. If you want space, don’t live in a city. All the small shops that make the city special won’t be able to afford to exist because buildings that once housed 30 units are being reduced to 10. Rich people literally destroy everything. They’re locusts.

    • Rich people pay for everything including all the services you are getting for free.

Agreed about the parking being unnecessary, but this site was a parking lot for decades, so it’s simply trading the outdoor parking for indoor parking, plus 10 new apartments. Actually, considering the high-land costs and the inefficient lot shape, I’m surprised this building isn’t all full-floor units!

  3. Oh my god this is gorgeous and such a good quality design to fill in that ugly asphalt space! Can’t wait to see this go up!
