Construction on the Domino Sugar Refinery has reached a major milestone with the installation of the signature signage atop the 140-year-old former factory, which is undergoing a commercial conversion and expansion at 292 Kent Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Designed by Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) and developed by Two Trees, the $250 million project is known as The Refinery and involves a full gut renovation and construction of a 27,000-square-foot glass-clad barrel vault atop the parapet, bringing the structure’s total height to 235 feet. Dencityworks and Bonetti/Kozerski are the interior designers for the property, which is located along the East River waterfront between South 2nd and South 3rd Streets.
At the time of our last update in October, the steel frame for the barrel vault was just finishing construction. Since then, the new Domino Sugar signage has been installed to the south of the central smokestack on the western elevation. Work has yet to begin on the glass paneling for the extension, though this could commence in the coming weeks.
A penthouse office space will occupy the upper floors within the barrel vault.
292 Kent Avenue will feature 12 levels of office space, a 14th-floor event space with double-height ceilings, a catering kitchen, back-of-house areas, and ground-floor retail space. New landscaping will also surround the entire property.
YIMBY anticipates The Refinery to complete construction near the end of 2023.

Saving this historical evidence of Brooklyn’s industrial waterfront past makes it the most important part of the entire project. Bravo!
Oh yeah baby
I’m 74 y/o and remember taking the Circle Line during the 50s and passing the huge “Maxwell House” clock on the Jersey side, if I remember correctly. This is even better.
I wish we could get the Maxwell House sign back…good til the last drop…
Christmas came early this year!!! So beautiful and love these photos capturing the nostalgia!
Sugar refining must have been such a miserable job back in the day. Havemeyer did not necessarily treat his workers well and Williamsburg was an overpopulated slum. I don’t love the giant sign celebrating the brand Domino Sugar, but am very happy with the whole revitalization of this waterfront and North Brooklyn as a whole.
You crazy…the sign is, ehhm, sweet.
Beautiful rehab project. First class.
Congratulations to the developers, architects, and contractors.
A really beautiful landmark!
Awesome!
Up close, the brickwork detailing is stunning
