Construction teams have broken ground at 212 West 124th Street, the site of a new affordable housing tower within the Marcus Garvey Village complex in Central Harlem. From developer Carthage Real Estate Advisors and Body Lawson Associates Architects and Planners, the new building is expected to debut next winter.

The complex will comprise 300,000 square feet, with three mid-rise towers, two of which will be 100 percent affordable. The complex will have more than 300 apartments, 3,200 square feet of commercial space, and 7,164 square feet of community facilities, including an LGBTQ+ community center.

The two other buildings are located at 212 West 124th Street and 224 West 124th Street.

“This project has been my dream for more than 25 years, starting when I was co-chair of the Housing Committee for Community Board 10,” said Edward Poteat, president of Carthage Real Estate Advisors. “I especially want to thank the visionary team at New York City Housing Development Corporation for their support on every level.”

Earlier this year, Carthage Real Estate Advisors closed on a $100 million construction loan to complete the complex. The team received additional support from the West Harlem Development, which contributed $2 million toward the affordable housing component.

Renderings show the building clad primarily in red brick, with a series of stepped setback on the upper levels, which are enclosed in dark gray paneling. The structure incorporates numerous stacks of balconies across the depicted elevations, suggesting there will be private outdoor space for the majority of the units.

There clearly aren’t enough balconies. Can we please get more balconies?
Something isn’t right with the address.

    • Yeah this is confusing. 112 doesn’t seem to be the sight and and identical building is already complete at 224 but there’s a brand new parking lot to the west. YIMBY should clarify this story.

Yes yes i like it thank you

  3. Looks okay. Better than that stucco affordible job that just finished a few blocks away.

  4. Pretty sure 212 is the correct address. What’s with the parking lot at 250? Is a third building planned for that site?

Overall these buildings look great and are a real improvement.

    • I should clarify my question–the balconies on 224 adjacent to the parking lot seem to preclude a similar building there. In contrast, the side of 224 adjacent to the construction at 212 is a blank wall.

  5. the terraces were axed from the low income project for 212 west 124th. the building is complete.
