When we last brought you news from the corner of Broadway and West 80th Street, there were plans for a 14-story mixed-use building at no. 2230 (a.k.a. 2228-2236 Broadway). Now, things have changed, and work is underway on a taller building with more residential units and a bit of a different look.
The new building, seen in the above photo from alert tipster Richard Chused, is still being developed by Rose Associated and designed by Stephen B. Jacobs. Now, however, it will be 19 stories tall (rising to 206 feet) with 72 residential units (up from 54). The total residential space will be 115,836 square feet, which could mean an average residence of about 1,608 square feet. Retail space will occupy 7,316 square feet.
Among the amenities will be bike storage, a gym, a kids playroom, a roof terrace, and even a “teen club.”
The site, formerly home to Filene’s Basement, Circuit City, and Fox’s department store, sits in a narrow space in-between historic districts. That means that the changes to the building’s design did not have to be approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
