On Friday, ground was broken to expand a public school in Queens. The school is P.S/I.S. 49 at 63-60 80th Street, in Middle Village.
The school currently serves 1,113 students, all the way from kindergarten to eighth grade. The three-story expansion will add 26,000 square feet – room for 13 regular classrooms, two special education classrooms, three resource rooms, a medical suite, an exercise room, and an expanded cafeteria.
The addition will be also connected to the current main lobby. As part of the project, the team will also resurface the school’s play yard.
Originally built in 1933, this isn’t the first time the school has expanded. There was also an expansion in 2009 and this one, like that one, has been designed by the architectural firm of John Ciardullo P.C.
“The new building’s contemporary architecture will reflect the exterior of the 2009 expansion,” Ciardullo said in a statement.
“The addition will feature a partial basement, concrete foundation walls and footings, a structural steel frame, brick and masonry exterior walls, and a glass-and-aluminum curtain wall section,” explained Jarrett Semkow, project manager at John Ciardullo P.C.
The project is being supervised by the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) and actually being built by the firm E.W. Howell.
“The addition is designed in accordance with the NYC Green Schools Guide and Rating System, which specifies energy efficiency and healthy environment requirements, as well as sustainable architecture and construction practices for New York City public schools,” Howell project manager Robert V. Isbit said.
The site is located right off Juniper Valley Park.
Completion is expected in the second half of 2017.
