In March, renderings surfaced for the Turkevi Center, a planned mission, consulate, and residential tower for the Republic of Turkey. Now the Turkish consulate has filed applications for the 35-story development at 821 First Avenue, at the corner of 46th Street.
The building will reach 563 feet into the air across the street from the United Nations. It will also have an alternate address of 821 United Nations Plaza, as First Avenue is known between 42nd and 49th Streets.
Perkins Eastman is designing the building, which will be partly modeled on the Turkish crescent.
Roughly 102,000 square feet of commercial space will fill the first 15 floors. That includes an auditorium in the cellar levels, several stories of offices, a prayer room, passport and visa branch offices, and outdoor terraces on the seventh, 11th, and 16th floors.
Twenty apartments for staff and visitors will be stacked on top, beginning on the 20th floor. They’ll be divided across 40,915 square feet of residential space, for a typical unit measuring 2,045 square feet. Two apartments will be duplexes, and residents will have access to a gym with a terrace on the 20th floor. There will also be a 20-car garage in the subcellar.
Turkey will demolish its current 12-story building at the corner of 46th and First, and the new structure will fill that lot and an empty one next door. Demolition plans have been filed but not yet approved for the old building, which was constructed in 1958.

If you stand close enough to even a two story building it will obscure anything else around it….perspective!
NYC is a metropolis, it will be constantly changing. The height of the Chrysler building will be dwarfed by the average height of skyscrapers ten years from now, technology changes.
No more than the building one block uptown from it, and the building one block downtown from it, and, really, any other tall building in East Midtown.
On an investment (commercial, money and tower), it is certain that 35-story will happen.
I am interested to invest in this project. What your is your actual asking price for an appartment which has a net living space of 150 sqm? How much should be paid in advance? What are the other payment conditions? Are you also helping your customers to arrange a mortgage for 80% of the value of the purchased appartment?
And what, exactly, makes this “Turkish” in ANY sense? Or New Yorkish for that matter? Seriously BORING international nothingness. One planet more BAD architecture. Surely that is what they are chanting in “architecture” schools around the world.
