Last week, YIMBY featured an update on 606 Broadway, on West Houston Street. A few blocks east, an even larger building is rising on a slightly less irregularly-shaped lot, at 300 Lafayette Street, for which we have the latest images courtesy of Tectonic.
The seven-story commercial building marks the end of an era. The site had been occupied by a gas station since the early 20th century. The architectural firm, COOKFOX wrote about this aspect of the project, publishing the following statement on their website:
“300 Lafayette Street is a fragment of underdeveloped space left over from the confluence of Lafayette and Houston Streets and the construction of the subways below. Historically home to a gas station and billboards, this prominent intersection is the result of past planning decisions that transformed Houston Street into one of Manhattan’s major cross-town traffic arteries.”
The façade will integrate terra cotta and limestone along with completely transparent glass and organic life. The renderings depict an agile structure with high ceilings, and plants lining the exteriors of each floor.
The structure will yield a total 83,000 square feet, with 30,000 square feet of retail and 53,000 square feet of office space.
Related and LargaVista Companies are responsible for development, while March Associates Construction Inc is the construction manager. Related is the same firm behind the $25 billion Hudson Yards project rising up on Manhattan’s west side.
Construction has reached the fourth floor, staying on track for completion by 2018.

I love that section of town, and that corner in particular. Unfortunately I can only imagine how much more congested the area will be once those commercial properties come in. I don’t feel the infrastructure is there to support the growth.
