Expect an additional 8,500 Google employees in Manhattan if the giant tech company scores a deal for St. John’s Terminal, at 550 Washington Street. If you’ve lost count, it adds up to a projected 19K Googlers working in the city. That includes the 7,000 headcount (as of early 2018) in their current office space at 111 8th Avenue near Chelsea Market, and the 3,500-staff member expansion currently in the works as a result of Google’s $2.4 billion purchase of 300,000 square feet at Chelsea Market and another 250,000 square feet at Pier 57.

Google is clearly on a mission to expand their New York City presence. They’ve certainly come quite a ways since leasing their West Side Manhattan headquarters in 2006, which they later purchased in 2010. The Wall Street Journal reported on Google’s attraction to the West Village’s former freight terminal, St. John’s Terminal. The massive building was purchased by Oxford Properties in early 2018, and is in store for a sleek and modern office upgrade according to recently released architectural renderings.

Oxford Properties has big plans to build an additional nine floors to the existing three-story waterfront property. Its substantial footprint spans two complete city blocks, and will have amassed a total scope of 1.3 million square feet by completion in 2022. Hudson River Park views, a lush green rooftop and terraces, and an accessible location close to Soho and Tribeca make this an ideal spot for Google to further expand their business and product divisions.
Google has expressed plans to significantly grow their workforce across the country with additional data centers expected in five states, and more office space coming to a minimum of nine additional states.
