Google’s Billion-Dollar New York Campus Expansion Lands in Hudson Square, Manhattan

In a surprise announcement, Google has confirmed an initiative to expand its existing footprint in New York City. That expansion translates to a $1 Billion investment in Manhattan’s Hudson Square neighborhood. Officially known as Google Hudson Square, the 1.7 million square foot campus will occupy both 345 and 315 Hudson Street, as well as St. John’s Terminal located at 550 Washington Street.

Earlier this year, Google announced its $2.4 Billion purchase of Manhattan’s Chelsea Market located across the street from its existing “Google Chelsea” campus at 111 Eighth Avenue. Today, the announcement arrives with a pledge to expand the firm’s workforce by 7,000.

“We hope to start moving into the two Hudson Street buildings by 2020, followed by 550 Washington Street in 2022 once the building is complete,” said Ruth Porat, Google’s SVP and CFO. “Google Hudson Square will be the primary location for our New York-based Global Business Organization.”

Located just south of the West Village, Google’s 315 Hudson Street offices will span floors six through ten, and portions of the 5th floor. Amenity areas will include a rooftop garden, indoor and outdoor event spaces, bike storage, and a cafe. According to Jack Resnick & Sons who acquired 315 Hudson in the 1960’s, Google will bring the building to 100 percent occupancy.

In October of this year, Oxford Property Group revealed plans to redevelop the defunct St. John’s Terminal at 550 Washington Street. The existing building will grow to a whopping 1.3 million square feet, following an expansion from 4 to 12 stories. When complete, future occupants will enjoy landscaped terraces, rooftop area, and a lush entry plaza.
