Pratt Institute, a prestigious private university in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, recently unveiled a new dormitory known as Emerson Place Residence. Located at 135 Emerson Place between Myrtle and Willoughby avenues, the ten-story building overlooks the Northeastern corner of the campus and was designed in collaboration by CannonDesign, Hanrahan Meyers Architects, and other professionals from the institute, itself.
The building is designed to best suit the needs of an increasingly diverse student body and youthful population. This includes open floor plans throughout, a vertical courtyard to promote the flow of natural light, gender-neutral hallway-based bathrooms, distributed singular bathrooms, and several communal lounges. Residential quarters include 260 beds for incoming and transfer students.
Renderings show a red brick exterior with a distinctive angled cutaway in the center of the main elevation. Positioned at a 45-degree angle, this section features white accenting and widens as it approaches the building’s parapet. The interior appears to incorporate skylights.

“Emerson Place Residence was specifically designed to integrate seamlessly into the fabric of Pratt’s community, Brooklyn, and beyond,” said Thomas Hanrahan, former School of Architecture Dean at Pratt and Partner with Hanrahan Meyers Architects (hMa). “Our mission was to support new Pratt students through an inclusive, open community that empowers them on their journey toward creative and professional excellence.”
Pratt Institute acquire the building for $13 million in 2012 from Cara Development, which originally intended to construct a 16-story, 95,000-square-foot building. Emerson Place Residence occupies about 60 percent of allowable zoning rights measuring approximately 57,000 square feet.

As a Pratt alumni, they really should be focusing on renovating the other dump dorms, especially for the prices they charge for staying there in tuition. Their facilities overall are a real **** show.

This is a really beautiful, smart design that takes the usually forgotten backside of typical NY low rise housing and makes it the best part.
As a Pratt ALUMNI I totaly agree with the first comment.
Despite the other crappy dorms, a design university in Brooklyn has a significant responsibility to promote architecture.
it would have been nice if they included even a sliver of planted space in front with a few benches but overall it seems to be a pretty decent building.
