YIMBY checked in recently at 520 Fifth Avenue, the site of a planned 920-foot-tall skyscraper that takes the number 13 spot on our countdown of the tallest projects in progress in New York City. Located in Midtown at the corner of Fifth Avenue and West 43rd Street, the plot sits cleared for construction, which YIMBY expects will commence sometime in 2020. YIMBY last reported that Handel Architects is designing and Arthur Hooper of Ceruzzi Properties is developing the project in conjunction with SMI USA. Ceruzzi purchased the property in 2015 for $275 million from Thor Equities.

520 Fifth Avenue is one block north of Bryant Park and close to other skyscrapers like 500 Fifth Avenue, One Vanderbilt, and the Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park.

The development will contain 35,900 square feet of ground-floor retail space, around 171,000 square feet of residential space divided into 145 units measuring around 1,300 square feet apiece, and a hotel spanning 21 floors with 208 rooms spread among 175,000 square feet. The exterior is made up of a glass curtain wall with floor-to-ceiling panels and a number of chamfered corners around the lower setbacks of the bottom floors. This design would certainly stand out against the backdrop of flat roofs and neighboring masonry-clad buildings.

This will eventually become the second tallest skyscraper along Fifth Avenue, easily surpassing the 673-foot-tall roof height of the recently completed 277 Fifth Avenue in NoMad and only eclipsed by the venerable Empire State Building. Grand Central Terminal is a short walk away, along with the B, D, F, M, and 7 trains at Bryant Park. A plethora of retail and dining options are available throughout the district.

A start and completion date to the construction of 520 Fifth avenue has not been revealed.

  1. An empty lot on 43rd and 5th ave looks Apocalyptic..fill it up..soon!

  2. Seems like a prominent corner on 5th, what was at this location before demolition?

  3. Very tired of super tall buildings!

  4. Good, this is precisely where tall buildings should go, rather than screwing up areas like Inwood that get abused by corrupt council members.

  5. Better idea. How about a PUBLIC fun space? A City Pool in the basement, then Art House movie theater at ground level. Then, heading upwards, maybe a snooker hall on one floor, a skating rink on another floor, a billiards parlor, a room for chess players, etc. etc. There seems to be enough housing for the rich already, especially since the next crash is around the corner, so how about something fun for regular folks. You know, the guys and gals that actually built this city.
