LPC Approves Rooftop Addition At 370 Adelphi Street In Fort Greene, Brooklyn

The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has approved proposals to renovate a three-story townhouse at 370 Adelphi Street in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Historic District. Drawings submitted to the LPC only specify alterations at the rear of the property with a rooftop addition and do not propose any changes to the face of the structure along Adelphi Street. The building was purchased by Sarah McNally, the founder of McNally Jackson Books, for around $2.53 million in 2019.

Scope of work includes a full redesign of the rear of the structure, which is currently in a state of disrepair. Alterations include removal of all existing windows, exterior paneling, the basement or yard-level door and awning, and guardrails along the second-floor deck. The deck itself will also be removed and the existing wall expanded to create additional floor space inside the building.

Beginning at the yard level, the building will receive new metal-clad doors that open out into private outdoor space, a balcony at the first floor, a large third-floor terrace, and a small roof-level terrace. The façade at the rear of the building will be constructed of traditional red brick. When complete, the building will include four individual units.

In voting to approve this proposal, the LPC stipulated that the rear yard addition be reduced in height by one floor, and that the rooftop addition be moved back to reduce visibility from the street level. The proposals do not specify the design architect responsible for the drawings, and applications are credited only to Sarah McNally.
