Construction is getting closer to completion at 180 East 88th Street, the tallest structure on the Upper East Side above 72nd Street. Designed and developed by DDG with HTO Architects as the architect of record, the 31-story building is located between East 87th Street and East 88th Street. Global Holdings Management is also part of the project’s development team.
Recent shots from Tectonic reveal only a few external touches standing in the way of completion. The most prominent outliers are the hyperbolic arches at the crown and the midpoint of the edifice, which have yet to receive their final cladding. The latter row is also awaiting the installation of its glass paneling, and is currently draped in orange netting. Meanwhile, the rest of the curtain wall is substantially finished with distinctive gray Kolumba masonry bricks, which are the work of Denmark-based firm Petersen Tegl. Interiors should be progressing into the final stages of work as well.

The property contains 100,242 square feet of residential space divided among 48 half- and full-floor homes, averaging 2,088 square feet apiece and each coming with 14-foot-high ceilings. There will be 10,255 square feet of residential amenities spanning eight stories, including a half basketball court, one of the city’s only private indoor soccer pitches, a children’s playroom, a game room, a residential lounge, and wine storage. The lower levels will contain 1,093 square feet of community facilities, and the building will feature a 24/7 attended lobby and a private gated entry on East 88th Street.
180 East 88th Street still looks like it could be completed before the end of 2020.

The rendering makes the building look like a holy landmark, which is certainly untrue. ?
Regardless, 180 East 88th Street has some excellent pronimence and overall just looks good and formal. My favorite part are the arches.
The arches are not going to be clad. They’re going to remain raw concrete. The developer is running out of money, and wants to get this done ASAP.
Those arches are parabolic, not hyperbolic.
This is one of the ugliest buildings I think I have ever seen. The mismatched windows, the texture of the exterior, the cheap look of it all—just a horrible eyesore.
I thought it rather hideous in renderings, but in photographs it’s considerably more comprehensible. The unfinished concrete (which I hope stays that way), textural elements and shadowplay really save the day.
The upper East Side sure isn’t like I remember it the first time I was there back in the early 80’s. A friend lives in the vicinity and had a relatively clear view of most of Manhattan from his condo on the 11th floor. Now he is essentially blocked behind much taller structures in all directions. Fortunately he lives in a corner unit and can at least see beyond his nose, but too many other people are more or less “building locked”.
