The Landmarks Preservation Commission is now reviewing proposals from The Metropolitan Museum of Art to renovate and replace deteriorating elements of the building’s exterior. Areas of focus include the signature sloped glass façades and skylights above the Rockefeller Wing and the Temple of Dendur.
Beyer Blinder Belle has been selected to oversee the renovation project.
As revealed in a public hearing on Tuesday, February 9, the façades’ protective UV coating and metal framing are significantly aged and must be replaced to better protect the artwork within these areas and maintain a pleasant viewing experience for visiting patrons.
The proposed glazing system will offer greater air tightness, which will improve the building’s overall energy performance, offer greater resistance to condensation and humidity, and will better moderate the amount of sunlight that enters these areas of the building. The glazing system is also avian-safe to help reduce deadly bird strikes that plague a number of glass buildings throughout New York City.
In addition to glass replacement, the project will also address other problematic areas of the exterior envelop including gutters, flashing, connection to adjacent masonry walls, and aging mechanical systems.
At this time, the Museum has not commented on when the project might begin.

Sparkling project into completely attracted, surroundings I don’t mind as regards on sloped glass: Thank you.
Sir or Madam, Is it possible that the artist-rendering picture is displayed in reverse? Seems the Temple should appear on the north end of the Met.
I like “Metropolitan Museum of Reveals”..very new wave.
Please send me an application for a 2BR apartment here.
Re Gil’s comment: the rendering correct. You are viewing the museum from the west. Hence the temple is depicted in its proper location.
If by “proper location” you mean the wrong location…
GJL is spot on and the Temple should be at the North side of the building (left side of the picture).
I’ll like to get an apartment near in the facility please help me to obtine one my son is an artist and love thanks
