Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys is opening a second retail location in Manhattan on the ground floor of Ohm, a 34-story mixed-use building at 312 Eleventh Avenue in Hudson Yards.

Kossar’s new post is expected to open this fall. When fully operational, visitors can expect Kossar’s signature assortment of homemade bagels, bialys, babkas, and challah, among other traditional favorites.

“Kossar’s was established at a time of uncertainty back in 1936, and in some ways, this past year has been similar with the uncertainty COVID-19 brought on, and the need for community that’s come out of it,” said Jonah Phillips, partner at Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys. “Hudson Yards, like the Lower East Side, is a vision with community at its core, and we hope that Kossar’s will continue to grow and endure through the good and hard times for the next 85 years and beyond.”

Kossar’s first retail location opened in 1936 at 145 Clinton Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Following an explosion that shuttered the family operation in 1958, Kossar’s reopened on the Lower East Side, this time at 357 Grand Street. Fast forward to today, the new 1,200-square-foot shop is located just steps from Related‘s first phase of Hudson Yards in a space previously occupied by a small pizzeria.

Joshua Young, vice president of market rate operations at Clinton Management, the property management affiliate of Douglaston Development, represented the developer in the transaction. Peter Braus, managing principal and co-founder of Lee & Associates NYC, negotiated the 15-year lease on behalf of Kossar’s.

According to Douglaston Development, the asking rent was $120 per square foot.

“We’re thrilled to have Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys at Ohm, adding one of the oldest New York City bakery staples to the rapidly growing food and beverage offerings in the area,” Young said. “This lease marks Kossar’s first foray into West Chelsea and contributes to Douglaston Development and Clinton Management’s commitment to bringing authentic and dedicated businesses to West Chelsea.”

  1. Kossars had a location on the south side of 14th Street between Avenue A and B during the 1960’s and ’70’s. Like the famous Italian bakery Zito’s in the Village, long closed now, the great treat is getting a bread still warm from the oven.

At Kossars, I highly recomemend two breads that are not always available, though I forget their precise names, they are:
    – one that looks like a hero shaped bread, but much denser, and I think from the same dough as a bialy,
    – and the other one my grandmother called a “pletzel” – a 10″ +/_ diameter disk baked with “everything” or better just with onion that somewhat resembles a super-large “flagell”

….and the bagels ain’t bad either.

I look forward to a new branch much closer to me than Grand Street. And thanks to YIMBY for noting this culinary event.
