Hudson Square is now home to “Restorative Ground,” a temporary public art installation and pavilion designed by WIP Collaborative. The installation is located on King Street between Hudson and Greenwich Streets and arrives as part of the local community’s participation in New York City’s Open Streets Program.
The goal of the installation is to create a new interactive destination for residents, office tenants, and the public to convene and experience New York City as a community. Entities responsible for the project are represented as Hudson Square Properties, a joint venture between Trinity Church Wall Street, Norges Bank Investment Group, and Hines. The group partnered with the Urban Design Forum and the Hudson Square BID to complete the installation.
“This was our chance to give a gift and through our partnership with Trinity Church, Norges Bank, and our co-pilots on this initiative, Urban Design Forum and the Hudson Square BID, this installation has come together as a joyful and additive complement to the natural and organic rebound of the vibrancy and human vitality that New York City is known for,” said Tommy Craig, senior managing director of Hines. “Restorative Ground is a foreshadowing of what’s to come as we endeavor to implement more aspirational plans for permanent improvements on King Street.”
The installation was chosen as a winning submission to the Care for Hudson Square competition, a call for entries that began in mid-2020. Restorative Ground straddles a parking lane along King Street and is expected to reinvigorate the underutilized block.
Manhattan Community Board 2, which encompasses Hudson Square, Greenwich Village, West Village, South Village, NoHo, SoHo, Little Italy, NoLita, and a portion of Chinatown, expressed great support for the project and joined members of the project team for a ribbon-cutting event that took place in July.
The temporary installation will eventually be donated to another streetscape in New York to create a similar outdoor experience.
