Though the One57 saga continues—glass has made no recent progress—the new crane is finally being installed, with the turntable for the ‘cab’ now visible. Nearly six months have passed since Hurricane Sandy, and the logistics of replacing a crane 1,000′ in the air have caused significant headaches. With the latest developments, it does appear that a functional tower crane will soon return, allowing the building to reach completion.
One block to the west, activity is picking up on the site for the new Nordstrom Tower, at 225 West 57th Street. Extell is beginning demolition work on the former Morton Williams Store, as well as on 1780 Broadway, which has a landmarked facade that will be integrated into the new tower.
With all permits filed and heavy machinery now on-site, the two remaining buildings should be demolished quickly. Unfortunately the project still lacks renderings, though Smith + Gill’s website gives a taste of what New Yorkers could expect—and hopefully the resulting tower will be as iconic as it is dominant, as a final height of over 1,500 feet will ensure long-term prominence on the Midtown skyline.
