Elected officials recently celebrated the opening of a new COVID-19 testing and vaccination center at Astoria Houses. Located at 4-25 Astoria Boulevard in Astoria, Queens, the facility sits inside repurposed shipping containers and was designed in partnership by research teams from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and The Tuchman Foundation.

“We need to make sure New York’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic is inclusive, equitable, and fair,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul. “That’s why it’s so important to have sites like this new medical care unit at the Astoria Houses, bringing much-needed resources and services to communities that had been left behind for far too long.”

Completed in 1951, Astoria Houses is a low-income NYCHA complex that consists of 24 buildings spread across more than 32 acres. The complex supports a resident population of more than 3,100 tenants.

In addition to NJIT and the Tuchman Foundation, completion of the facility was made possible through a public-private partnership which included NYCHA, New York City and New York State agencies, and The Floating Hospital. Founded in 1866, the Floating Hospital is a non-profit organization that provides healthcare services to medically underserved communities across New York City.

Specific contributions include nearly $100,000 from NYCHA and the provision of medical staff from The Floating Hospital.
