Hunts Point Produce Market is set to undergo a $405 million redevelopment with a new all-electric intermodal food distribution facility in Hunts Point, The Bronx. Led by Aurora-Primus, a joint venture between Aurora Contractors, LLC and Primus Builders, Inc., the project will aim to eliminate diesel-powered transport refrigeration units, increase refrigerated warehouse space, and improve site-wide circulation to reduce congestion. The new facility will rise along the Bronx River on a site currently occupied by rail yards.

Mayor Eric Adams, the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), and the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Cooperative announced the redevelopment plan yesterday.

Spanning more than 100 acres and currently housing 26 businesses, the Hunts Point Produce Market supplies approximately 25 percent of the city’s fresh produce and employs thousands. The initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency, air quality, and long-term sustainability for the cooperative’s produce businesses.

The project supports broader infrastructure and environmental goals outlined in the city’s “Hunts Point Forward Plan,” “PlaNYC: Getting Sustainability Done,” and the “Green Economy Action Plan.” It also complements the city’s “Blue Highways” freight movement initiative by integrating with nearby marine facilities to reduce truck traffic. NYCEDC estimates the redevelopment will create more than 2,000 construction jobs and preserve existing employment at the market.

“This agreement represents an important milestone and creates a clear framework for the next phase of work as we advance planning and design for a modern, more sustainable market that supports our mission of feeding New York City with fresh produce from around the world,” said Hunts Point Produce Market co-president Stephen Katzman. “We thank Mayor Adams and his administration, Governor Hochul, and our city, state, and federal partners for their leadership and collaboration, and we look forward to continuing this work together with the incoming city administration as the project moves forward.”

Construction is expected to begin in late 2026.

There is a question whether having the city’s main source of food located in a flood zone is prudent. Granted ocean-type waves are unlikely to occur at that location.

  2. A crucial part of our city..hopefully this doesn’t become a target for ICE raids..

  3. Mayor Adams worked to the very last minute to get things done for New York.
