Stonehenge’s redevelopment at 101 West 15th Street – formerly 555 Sixth Avenue – is nearing completion, and the final product lacks the tumor-like obtrusions that were present in the original renderings, by ODA Architecture. The renovation has resulted in a subtle yet dramatic improvement to the building’s appearance, and the addition of street level retail will help enhance a stretch of Sixth Avenue that had been surprisingly barren.
Though part of the plan for 101 West 15th Street was not implemented, in this case, it’s to the project’s benefit – the protrusions on the upper floors were the only bad aspect of the re-design. The renovated building is a major improvement, with a re-done facade that blends nicely with the development’s Chelsea surroundings – the old 101 West 15th was unfriendly to the eyes and the street scape.
Besides the addition of retail, the other major change involved 101 West 15th’s windows, all of which were replaced – giving the development a much more modern look. The minor modifications by Stonehenge have resulted in a palatable final product, though the original building had no historic merit, and a total tear-down would have been acceptable.
The project’s website has further details – 101 West 15th offers a total of 160 studio and one bedroom apartments, with rents starting at $3,475.
