Demolition is complete at Avalon’s newly-dubbed 100 Willoughby Street, which will soon usurp the neighboring 388 Bridge Street to take the title of Brooklyn’s tallest building. Permits filed with the Department of Buildings indicate 100 Willoughby will only rise five feet taller than 388 Bridge; the main difference between the two buildings will be housing types, as 100 Willoughby will contain 823 rental units as opposed to the 378- unit condo/rental mix at 388 Bridge, as the two projects share architect SLCE.
The design posted on-site is different from past renderings, and a definite upgrade; the aesthetic will be decidedly more modern than the traditional mix in Downtown Brooklyn, but that’s a necessary change for a neighborhood where forward-thinking architecture remains sparse. In its simplest form, the tower is an enormous box – luckily the facade breaks potential monotony, with the multi-colored glass an especially effective touch. What could have been boring is instead aesthetically appealing, and 100 Willoughby Street will make an excellent temporary title-holder of Brooklyn’s tallest.
Completion of the tower is expected in 2015, which is when construction of CityPoint’s phase III may already be underway – and that’s the tower that will likely unseat 100 Willoughby Street to become Brooklyn’s highest pinnacle, potentially by a much wider margin than the recent contenders, which have only seen minor increases in height.
