After 52 years in an imposing eight-story building at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 12th Street in Greenwich Village, Forbes Magazine moved to new headquarters in Jersey City last year. Now the new owner, New York University, has filed plans to expand the 1925 office building at 60 Fifth Avenue.
The 109-foot-tall structure will remain eight stories but gain an extra 10,000 square feet. The interior footage will grow from 92,566 to 102,742 square feet, and the roof line will rise to 121 feet. Classrooms will take up the basement and first floor, and remaining floors will hold offices for administrators and faculty members, lounges and conference rooms.
The university removed the iconic letters spelling out Forbes Magazine from the facade last October, even though it claimed it wouldn’t make any changes to the exterior beyond a restoration. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Forbes signed a preservation easement with the National Architectural Trust to protect its exterior in 2006.
On its page about the renovation project, NYU says that interior demolition began in April. Work is scheduled to wrap in the spring of 2016.
NYU purchased the lovely old building for $65 million in 2010, and Forbes rented their office space for the next four years.
