The Brownsville Arts Center and Apartments will become the first of three developments included in a $1 billion infrastructure and affordable housing plan to reshape and invigorate the Brownsville, Brooklyn community. The site is on Rockaway Avenue and Chester Street.
The new center will yield approximately 230 affordable units for low-income and formerly homeless households. The project will also introduce 24,000 square feet of new arts and cultural facilities including a dance and performance school, a media lab, and a black box theater. The theater is expected to provide continuous cultural programming accessible to the general public.
The project team includes Gilbane Development company and Artspace Projects.
“The new cultural center will be Brownsville’s hub for tech and arts and will also serve as a collaborative space for local organizations to convene, said New York Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D). ͞The mixed-use center will play a role in addressing the affordable housing crisis by allotting 230 units to extremely low-income and formerly homeless residents.”
Introduced as “The Brownsville Plan,” the initiative represents a collaboration across several government offices including New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), Mayor’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (MOCTO), the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ), the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), and the NYC Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
According to a recent press release, The Brownsville Plan is expected to yield over 2,500 affordable homes with more than 500 residences currently under construction.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO LIVE THERE
“Rockaway Avenue and Chester Street” – while no doubt accurate, this piece of information is not specific enough to identify a site. Rockaway Avenue and Chester Street are parallel. Does anyone know the cross street?
