Excavation Making Headway for “Solar Carve” Building at 40 Tenth Avenue, Meatpacking District

YIMBY last reported on 40 Tenth Avenue when new building applications were filed for the site, in November of 2015. Now, with demolition of an old three-story warehouse complete, construction on the office project is finally getting underway. The progress on excavation has been substantial, and piling and caissons are also beginning to appear. Jeanne Gang Architects is behind the design, and the latest photos come from YIMBY Forum user JC_Heights.

First Nine Pilings Completed for Pier55 Public Park Off Meatpacking District

Construction on the first nine piles has been completed for the 2.7-acre park, dubbed Pier55, planned in the Hudson River. The location is near the Meatpacking District off West 13th Street. The pilings mark the end of the first phase of construction, DNAinfo reported. The public park is expected to have grassy hills, vegetation, recreational space with paths and seating, and an amphitheater. The London-based design firm Heatherwick Studio and New York-based Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects are behind the design. A partnership between The Diller – von Furstenberg Family Foundation and the Hudson River Part Trust is developing the project. The pedestrian bridge connecting the park to Manhattan will be built by the city. Completion is expected in 2019.

Final Approvals Granted for Pier55 Park Off the Meatpacking District

In June of 2015, slight changes to Pier55’s design were revealed as the park project was making its way through the approval process. Now, the Hudson River Park Trust has announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has green-lighted the project, according to Crain’s. The 2.7-acre, 62-foot-tall structure, to be built off the Meatpacking District in the Hudson River, will include grassy hills, recreational event space, and an amphitheater. It will connect to Manhattan via a pedestrian bridge at West 13th Street. The bridge will be funded with federal money, but the park itself is being financed by a non-profit partnership between Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg. The duo have already contributed $113 million, and construction is expected to kick off in early May.

Landmarks Commissioners Make Feelings Known As Gansevoort Market Presentation Continues Without Approval

William Gottlieb Real Estate and Aurora Capital’s Meatpacking District proposal is not yet a go. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission took no action on the BKSK Architects-designed project on the block from 46-74 Gansevoort Street, between Greenwich Street and Washington Street, in the Gansevoort Market Historic District. The commissioners didn’t seem like they’d require the current low-scale structures to remain as is, but certainly had issues with just how big they’d get and just how it would look.

First Look at 76 11th Avenue, BIG-Designed Towers Coming to Meatpacking

While the length of the High Line has seen a surge of construction since the elevated park initially opened, there are still a few major sites left that remain ripe for new development. Perhaps the largest such parcel is at 76 11th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets, which was acquired by HFZ Capital for $870 million back in April. Now, YIMBY can reveal the site’s preliminary plans, created by Bjarke Ingels Group.

Public Comes Out Against Gansevoort Market Project at Landmarks Hearing

A plan to remake the south side of Gansevoort Street between Greenwich and Washington Streets got a big thumbs down from the public at a Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing on Tuesday. The plan from William Gottlieb Real Estate and Aurora Capital would bring more commercial and retail space to the block and would do so by demolishing two buildings and replacing them with new ones and modifying several others.

Updated Plans Revealed For Pier 57 “SuperPier” Project, Meatpacking District

YoungWoo & Associates and RXR Realty have presented updated plans for the renovation of Pier 57, an abandoned 560,000 square-foot former waterway terminal, near the Meatpacking District. According to Curbed, the rooftop will operate as a 1.8-acre public park, with 13,399 square feet of green space, a restaurant pavilion and wooden stadium. It was also previously reported a 100,000 square-foot food court is planned, and Google is expected to take 250,000 square feet of office space. A public hearing on the project is expected in the coming months. Completion is slated for 2017.

Eight-Story Commercial Redevelopment Planned At 46-74 Gansevoort Street, Meatpacking District

William Gottlieb Real Estate and Aurora Capital Associates are planning to redevelop the low-rise market buildings spanning 46-74 Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, according to The Villager. Plans, filed this past June, call for an eight-story building at 70-74 Gansevoort, and expansions to three and four stories to existing two-story buildings at 60-68 Gansevoort.

Demolition of the structures at Nos. 50 and 70-74 is the first step, and any alteration or removal will have to be approved by the LPC. The properties are zoned for hotels, offices, retail and light manufacturing, and roughly 111,000 square feet of space is proposed. BKSK is the architect of record.

Five-Story Building At 55 Gansevoort Street To Be Converted Into 14-Key Hotel, Meatpacking District

Restoration Hardware is planning to convert the five-story, 25,000 square-foot building at 55 Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, into a 14-key boutique hotel. According to Crain’s, the ground floor of the building will feature a restaurant. Delshah Capital owns the five-story building, but Restoration Hardware — whose flagship store is located around the corner of 9th Avenue — has leased the entire property.

Meatpacking District’s Pier55 Awaiting Final Approvals, Landscaping Tweaked

While the proposed park off the Meatpacking District, dubbed Pier55, waits for the Army Corps of Engineers and State Department’s approval, the project’s landscape architecture firm Mathews Nielsen has made small tweaks to the design. The park’s highest elevation has been lowered to 62 feet, according to Curbed, and vegetation will be very diverse. An amphitheater will be located near the back, and federal funds have been allotted for the park’s 13th Street pedestrian bridge. Construction is expected to begin in 2016.
