Major progress is being made on The Avalon West Chelsea, as the project’s ‘tower’ component is now rising at 298 Eleventh Avenue. The crane for the 30-story addition was only installed late last month, and the pace of construction is definitely impressive. Once complete, the high-rise will be similar in size to neighboring developments like The Ohm and 500 West 30th Street — West Chelsea is well on its way to becoming a mini-skyscraper forest of residential buildings.
Cladding is also climbing along the development’s mid-rise portion. The brick is inoffensive, but the exposed floor-plates seem to be particularly visible and — unfortunately — quite distracting; luckily another building will soon rise between The Avalon’s blank eastern wall and The High Line. Nonetheless, the facade is turning out uglier than anticipated, an unfortunate surprise for the far West Side.
