Work continues on the Herzog & de Meuron-designed 56 Leonard, though progress is slow-going; the tower has barely moved upwards since the last update, from June 3rd, though construction is clearly not stalled. The complexities of the design are responsible for the delay in work, as each floor is unique – a characteristic uncommon to new buildings in New York, but a trait that will define 56 Leonard, as the stupendous aesthetics are a derivative of the incredibly irregular design.
Despite the complications, forms are now up to the fourth floor. While the superstructure is still short, the tower’s crane is verging on prominence, and is already visible from much of Tribeca. Patience is a virtue, but the wait will be well worth it – 56 Leonard will become Tribeca’s defining architectural icon, finally giving the neighborhood a visually prominent symbol that both residents and tourists alike can enjoy, from near and afar.
