Major progress has been made for Dock 72, a 16-story commercial office building rising in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Incredibly, it is the first ground-up office building to rise in Brooklyn since MetroTech in the 1980’s. The development is a joint venture with Rudin Management and Boston Properties, with WeWork co-developing and handling amenities. WeWork will occupy nearly a third of the building.

The 250-foot tall structure topped out last fall. Construction is moving quickly, and the facade will likely be fully installed later this month. 675,000 square feet will be created, of which 220,000 square feet will be occupied by WeWork. Floor plates range from 42,000 to 60,000 square feet apiece. The building will contain an estimated 4,000 jobs.

Employees will have access to the NYC East River Ferry terminal on Dock 72, shuttle buses to DUMBO and Atlantic Terminal, bicycle valet services, and a Citi bike docking station.

S9 Architecture is responsible for the stepped design, inspired by the dock’s history. The project was designed to cater to the needs of the creative and innovated businesses of the modern age. This manifests with column-free floor plates, Wired Certified Platinum broadband and WiFi, and curtain walls for daylight. The building is surrounded by water on three sides. 16,000 square feet of outdoor balconies will be open for tenants’ use.

Dock 72 will be opening this Fall.

The entire Brooklyn Navy Yard development boasts the achievement of housing over 400 companies and 7,000 jobs already. The master plan will create over seven million square feet, with an optimal capacity for 30,000 jobs.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: Design lived on the ground forever, though sky pretty dark but it was showing its unique. (Thanks to Andrew Nelson)
