Now almost at its tenth floor, “The Standard” is on its way to an imminent 14-story pinnacle above New Rochelle. The upcoming residential building is located at 251 Northern Avenue, and began construction earlier this year. The project is being developed by the Cappelli Organization. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in April, and construction has progressed swiftly over the past eight months.

Part of the construction comes with the repurposing of a Neo-Classical building that stood in the downtown district for many decades. It was once the home of The Standard Star newspaper. It is a small, white-colored building with a symmetrical facade composed of large stone blocks, cornices, and a small keystone on top of the arched window over the tall, green-colored front door. The overall shape, proportions and appearance of the front elevation almost resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but with a much simplified design and more human scale.

The original, Neo-Classical structure located at 251 North Avenue.

The new building’s exterior will be composed of a uniform white facade and a varying pattern of thin and thick white-colored panels between the windows. The roof deck will feature an overhanging trellis for shade against the sun in the afternoon.

The extant structure’s name is carried on in the new tower, which will yield 112 rental apartments with nearly 4,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. The apartments will include 13 studios, 92 one-bedroom units, and seven two-bedroom spreads. The total scope of the project is about 87,000 square feet. Amenities for The Standard include a business center, a communal residential lounge with a full kitchen and dining area, an entertainment center, a fitness center, an enclosed parking garage, bicycle storage, and a roof deck with an outdoor kitchen.

A completion date for The Standard has yet to be announced, but sometime around late 2019 or early 2020 is plausible.

  2. that would be North Ave, not Northern 🙂

  3. I’ll keep you posted Joan as I can see the building rising out my window. There are also about 500 more apartments being built in this neighborhood in at least 5 other buildings or you can have mine un the larochelle building since this article has convinced me it is time to. Move
