Construction Wraps Up on Tory Burch Flagship Store at 151 Mercer Street in SoHo

Work is finishing up on 151 Mercer Street, the new four-story flagship store for Tory Burch. O’Neil Langan Architects designed the 10,000-square-foot SoHo project, which replaces an old two-story garage that formerly occupied the site. Located between West Houston Street and Prince Street, the building’s dark steel cladding and indented windows give it a sleek, modern look that contrasts with the adjacent brick structures and the cobblestone-street aesthetics of the neighborhood.

A new photograph by Tectonic shows the retail building’s completed façade. The ground-floor windows are still temporarily covered up.

The low-rise height of 151 Mercer Street fits contextually within the historic and charming Manhattan streetscape. Despite breaking from the characteristic architectural styles of the neighborhood, the building’s flat roof parapet, contemporary design, and earth-tone color palette  allow it to nevertheless blend in among the traditional row of ornate brick and cast iron structures. The photo below shows what the site looked like before demolition of the garage.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved 151 Mercer’s design in 2014, when the structure was slated to rise five stories tall. The upper two floors have an opaque façade, against which shadows create a sense of depth from the flat front of the symmetrical steel grid. The roof level of the building features an outdoor terrace.

The closest subways are the B, D, F, and M trains at the Broadway-Lafayette Street station, and the R and W trains at the Prince Street station. Both are located to the east, just a short walk away from the front doors. The site sits at the northern tip of SoHo and just below Greenwich Village, separated by West Houston Street.

It is unclear when the Tory Burch flagship will officially open its doors.
