Work Continues on Cantilevering Residential Building at 500 West 25th Street, in Chelsea

500 West 25th Street, designed by GF55 Partners and developed by GDS Development.

Construction is moving along on the topped-out residential structure at 500 West 25th Street in Chelsea. Most of the windows are installed, but a considerable amount of exterior work still remains to be completed before the scaffolding and black construction netting is ready to come down. GF55 Partners is the architect of record and GDS Development is developing the ten-story building, which is located next to the High Line at the corner of West 25th Street and Tenth Avenue.

Residences will occupy about 22,000 square feet, with stories two through eight containing full-floor apartments. A total of nine units are planned, including a duplex penthouse.

The outside will feature a grid of large windows that are slightly recessed from the perimeter. The main doors will be located on the northern elevation, which will sit beneath a number of balconies and the three-story-tall cantilever at the top of the building. The structure will be capped with a flat parapet featuring a roof deck. The rendering appears to show that architecturally finished concrete will make up the edges of the floor slabs and outer ring of structural columns.

The cantilever can be clearly seen when walking south on the High Line, and will provide views facing west toward the Hudson River for tenants of the upper floors with wide terraces. 500 West 25th Street is one of several projects along the High Line that is currently finishing up construction. The structure may not be the biggest or tallest, but it will add some architectural variety to the Chelsea neighborhood.

A completion date for 500 West 25th Street has not been announced yet.

  1. Thanks to Michael Young: Why do I have to look at it, I think you know. I’m not afraid beautiful appearances on progress, though a completion date has not been announced yet.

  2. Oh man! that large tree in the rendering “artfully” conceals a small old building next door. It is clearly seen in the photos! Whoever is buying the lower floors- for millions $$.. will have no view except brown walls. apprently the owners of the old building refused to sell.
