Demolition preparations have yet to begin at 339-345 East 33rd Street in Kips Bay, future site of a 23-story mixed-use building from GF55 Architects and Excel Development. Located between First and Second Avenues, the property would span 150,000 square feet and contain 173 residential units, as well as two levels of commercial space on the ground floor and cellar. Excel reportedly completed a large air rights deal in December to facilitate the development.

Recent photos from Tectonic capture the current streetscape surrounding the site. Four low-rise structures will need to be demolished to make way for the new building.

The main rendering shows a fairly large superstructure with two interlocking volumes. The bottom half of the edifice has a white exterior while the top section appears to be finished with a bronze-colored curtain wall. The entire southern façade includes floor-to-ceiling windows and a number of balconies above the 16th floor. The main setback and flat roof parapet closely align with those of the building’s eastern neighbor, addressed as 577 First Avenue. There is a slight cantilever on the western elevation.

The nearest transit to the site is the 33rd Street station, serviced by the 6 train. The address is also close to a number of buildings that make up the NYU Medical Center complex and is within proximity to the FDR Drive.

Timetables for demolition and construction at 339 East 33rd Street have not been announced.

A general comment: I can usually figure out exactly which exiting buildings are going to be demolished, but sometimes not. Could you give us red box around those buildings on your photos?

    • From right to left: The yellow brick walkup, the grey brick walkup, and the double-wide red brick walkup with yellow painted first floor appear to be slated for demolition. The red brick walkup with white painted first floor will remain, and the new development will jut out over it.

The buildings to be demolished appear to be still occupied. I live nearby and check regularly. Can YIMBY tell us from which buildings Extel has purchased air rights?
