517-523 West 29th Street’s Superstructure Passes the Halfway Point in Chelsea

Construction has passed the halfway mark at 517 West 29th Street, a ten-story, 135-foot-tall condominium project in Chelsea. Developed by Churchill Real Estate Holdings and designed by Ben Hanson Architect with Rand Engineering and Architecture as the architect of record, the building will yield 56,160 square feet with 60 residential units and nine private outdoor parking spaces.

Recent photos show the amount of progress that has occurred since our June update. The reinforced concrete superstructure has surpassed the height of its abutting neighbor to the west, while the newest floors settle with the help of wooden formwork. Work has yet to begin on the the dark masonry curtain wall and large industrial-style windows, and installation may not commence until after the structure has topped out. The site is located just to the west of the High Line between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, and sits on the border with Hudson Yards. The rectangular plot was once home to an old six-story brick building that Six Sigma purchased for $54.75 million.

The black color and brick texture of the symmetrical envelope will create a bold contrast with the surrounding glass- and metal-clad condominiums and office skyscrapers such as those in nearby Hudson Yards. The project will join the eclectic mix of new residential developments rising in recent years around the High Line.

517 West 29th Street is slated for completion in April 2021.
