Work is taking shape on the $8 million Emily Roebling Plaza underneath the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO, Brooklyn. The final component of the 1.3-mile-long Brooklyn Bridge Park complex designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc., the plaza honors Emily Roebling, who supervised the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge and became the first person to cross it in a horse-drawn carriage after its opening on May 24, 1883. The 2-acre park, located right off of Water Street near the DUMBO Brooklyn Bridge Park ferry terminal, broke ground amid a snowstorm on December 9, 2020. Attending and speaking at the ceremony were Kriss Roebling, Emily’s great-great grandson, along with his wife Meg Roebling and their two children Chase and August Roebling.
Photographs taken over this past spring and in recent weeks show the progress on the grounds. Concrete pavers are currently in the process of being laid, while mounds of dirt are being formed for the trees, garden beds, and landscaping. Pipes for the irrigation systems appear to also be present. Adjacent to the Emily Roebling Plaza is the Empire Fulton Ferry Lawn that is undergoing a renovation, and a substantial amount of new sod has been put into place. Further work includes the installation of park benches and over 100 protective bollards stretching from Old Fulton Street and Furman Street to Water Street and New Dock Street.

Below is a plan for park and lawn. The concrete pavers will lie directly underneath the roadways of the Brooklyn Bridge, while multiple plant beds of various shapes, a family garden, and grassy lawns surround the area.

Work on the Emily Roebling Plaza is expected to be finished between this fall and winter, as noted on the construction fence.

I wanna see those giant ass waterfalls again like they had under the bridge.
Great that Emily Roebling’s work is being recognized..and a quick nod to her husband Washington Roebling, and his father John would be great, that amazing story is still unknown for too many people.
