New renderings have been revealed for New York Liberty’s proposed practice facility at 1200 Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Designed by Populous, the $80 million project will yield 75,000 feet of training, recovery, and administrative space for the defending WNBA champions. The property is located along Newtown Creek at the intersection of Manhattan Avenue and Commercial Street.
The main aerial rendering above looks southeast at the site showcasing the structure’s stepped massing topped with green roofs and photovoltaic panels. A half court is positioned directly adjacent to Newton Creek.
Below is a street-level view looking east from Manhattan Avenue Park, giving a closer perspective of the building’s distinctive façade.
The complex will include two full-sized practice courts equipped with remote cameras and data tracking technology, as well as multi-video displays for on-court film reviews. Other features include private locker room suites for each player, and a two-story indoor-outdoor strength training facility with a cardio deck overlooking the practice courts. There is a recovery suite featuring steam, sauna, and massage rooms, and rehab technologies including hydrotherapy, as well as a hair, nail, and makeup studio for the players, and two private family lounges complete with nursery areas.
The facility is also planned to offer in-house private chefs and a roof deck with a dining area, as well as a broadcast and podcast studio, a dedicated media workroom, three floors of office space for the basketball team’s staff, and a retail storefront.
The low-rise occupants of 1164 and 1166 Manhattan Avenue at the southwestern corner of the block are slated to be incorporated into the development. These buildings, seen below, will house staff offices, dining, and administrative spaces.
The remainder of the plot is currently occupied by an open-air parking and storage lot, as seen in the below Google Maps satellite image.
The complex will be fully funded by the team’s ownership group. The development is also envisioned to create opportunities to foster community engagement and expand the team’s impact across the borough and New York City as a whole.
The nearest subway from the project site is the 7 train at the Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue station across Newtown Creek.
New York Liberty’s new facility is expected to open sometime in 2027.

I’m assuming the air rights will be sold to an adjacent property? Shame at how short it is considering its waterfront location.
WNBA loses $400M a year, why not throw away another $80M
stunning!
It’s about time!
Great Project !!! Will enrich this area just like how the Nets Practice Facility does in Industry City. My only question is this , since I’m not familiar with the area. The Number 7 subway is on the other side of Newton Creek. I don’t see a bridge connecting to the other side. Is there a plan to build a pedestrian bridge there ? Is there anyway to get to that side other than that ? Does anybody know ?
see reply 🙂
It’s about a 15 minute to either the G train at Greenpoint Ave or over the Pulaski Bridge to the 7 train at Vernon-Jackson. There’s also a NYC Ferry stop (Greenpoint) about a 15 minutes walk.
Not sure what happened to my other comment, but yes! There was a pedestrian bridge planned here not so long ago. Would love to see it brought back to life! Search “Floating Timber Bridge Proposed to Span Newtown Creek” for more.
The Pulaski Bridge is right next to this with stairs for a pedestrian and separated bike lane
This is so on trend for Liberty Day.
Hopefully the Liberty and the WNBA are paying for this.
From the article: “The complex will be fully funded by the team’s ownership group.”
The Waterfront really should.be public parks.not high facilities and luxury buildings, and not just a sliver of grass with a useless road sandwiches against it like Domino.Paek
Greenpoint local here.
You do know that there’s the Greenpoint Landing Esplanade and Newtown Barge Playground literally down the road right? A huge public park part of Greenpoint Landing, and more park space being built by the Greenpoint ferry terminal where 1 Java St is going up.
I don’t see why complaining about 100 feet of waterfront space for a basketball team should create drama when you have the rest of our waterfront. Just saying
It is odd that there is no public esplanade along the waterfront here. Not that they need a park, but an esplanade would be nice so that as more of these waterfront properties are developed, you have a public walkway along the entire waterfront. That’s what we have along the Hudson River in NJ.
They aren’t required to provide public access at the waterfront?
Seems like a waste not to put housing there or at least a waterfront park – or at least give the community some waterfront access. I wonder what will happen to the space after the NBA stops putting huge infusions of money into propping up the WNBA and WNBA goes bankrupt?

This project is only taking up about 100 feet of waterfront space for a basketball team and the rest of the public have so much more space to walk and relax. Shouldn’t be a big deal
Lol. So now they can have the local boys high school teams practice with them, and routinely beat the Liberty by 50 points without even trying.
misogyny a real high point here in NIMBY comments
sticking those typing fingers our from your cheetoh smelling caves
This looks wonderful! I’m a long-time Greenpoint resident. I walk my dog up to this end of Manhattan Avenue nearly every day, and I think it’s a great use of this particular space. I love the glass front and low profile.
