Façade installation is getting closer to completion on the 20-story Marriott SpringHill hotel at 223 West 46th Street in Times Square. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architects and developed by McSam Hotel Group, the project will yield 70,000 square feet and 200 guest rooms. Zhong Wang Construction Services Inc. is listed as the general contractor for the property, which is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

Since our last update in late August, the warm-colored brick exterior has made tremendous progress and now encloses the majority of the window grid as work continues on the upper mechanical bulkhead, water tower, and lower podium continues.

When we last checked in, only the lower floors were covered with the final brick exterior, while the rest of the tower was still wrapped with the blue waterproof membrane. The remaining work should be completed in the next few months, with the ground floor and main entrance as the last major sections to be finished. The blank western side of the building is largely complete, while the eastern side is enclosed with temporary scaffolding and black netting.

Compared to the below rendering, the finished product is turning out to have a warmer exterior and more texture than was apparent in the preview. Another significant alteration from the initial design is the reduction in the number of floors from around 34 stories to the final 20-story edifice that was built.

The hotel is located with convenient proximity to a large number of theaters, retail and dining options, and subways that include the A, C, E, N, Q, R, W, S, 1, 2, 3, and 7 trains underneath 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. There is also nearby access to the buses at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

223 West 46th Street is originally slated to be finished this winter, as noted on the construction board, though it looks like sometime in the spring is more conceivable.

  1. A nightmare.

  2. Beyond these pictures of yet another blight on the skyline, what’s up with that “hornets nest” of wires, cables or pipes? on that building near the “BOYS..” billboard? Looks like a fire hazard just waiting to happen?! 😨

It actually turned out much better than the rendering. Maybe Gene is just trolling us.

  4. A vast improvement on the existing (often fire-escape strewn) dross which passes for streetscape in NYC. The addition of yet another Hobbit-like piece of kit on the roof, i.e., water tower, is unfortunate but on the plus side for the most part, these anachronisms can’t be seen from street level.
