Excavation has begun at 571-577 Pavonia Avenue, the site of Journal Square Urby, a 25-story residential tower in the Journal Square section of Jersey City. Designed by HLW Architects and Amsterdam-based studio Concrete and developed by Ironstate Development, Panepinto Properties, and Kimmel, the 265-foot-tall structure will yield 317 residential units, a 2,607-square-foot cafe on the ground level, and 1,349 square feet of office space. The property is alternately addressed as 532 Summit Avenue and is located at the corner of Pavonia and Summit Avenues, a short walk from the Journal Square PATH station.

Photographs from late April show multiple excavators working on site, as well as the beginning of some pipe work along the southern end of the property. There are also several concrete footings that will eventually join the rest of the foundation slab and below-grade work for the substructure.

The residential inventory is comprised of 113 studios, 121 one-bedrooms, 58 two-bedrooms, and 15 three-bedrooms. Amenities at Journal Square Urby include indoor and outdoor lounge areas, a roof-level swimming pool deck with a dog run, a landscaped patio, an indoor communal kitchen, and a fitness center on the second floor with a yoga studio. There will also be bicycle storage located in the cellar.

Natural look of dark colors, in the area of a city that appears to machines living. So the tower was full on beautiful design, but is now empty for material building: Thanks to Michael Young.

  2. I don’t mind the three architectural styles mashed together. It honestly looks like mid century Chicago architecture all combined into one. What I do not like is the addition of a fourth style, the grey brick/stone in the last picture. It does not match the other three. Also stick to odd numbers when mixing styles

    • funny, Harrison: it’s actually 5 styles as the tall tower is a simple curtain wall at the top, and closer to the middle and bottom it has stripes. Is there an odd-number mix that is a “rule”? Missed that in architectural school, both undergrad and grad!!
The building is oddly out of control and in contol at the same time but the mix is curious…..”now empty for material building”.
