Construction is rising on the North Brooklyn Community Boathouse, a five-story commercial building at 51 Ash Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Designed by Jeffrey Kamen Architect and developed by a non-profit organization formerly known as the North Brooklyn Boat Club, the 60-foot-tall, 18,106-square-foot structure will feature a 9,856-square-foot hotel component with 11 rooms and an 8,250-square-foot community facility. Brooklyn Construction Group is the general contractor for the project, which is located along Ash Street between Newtown Creek and the Pulaski Bridge.
Recent photos show the reinforced concrete superstructure standing above the sidewalk scaffolding with tall bundles of rebar protruding in preparation for the formation of the columns for subsequent stories. White plastic sheets cover the southern end of the tall ground floor, and metal scaffolding is visible on the northern side of the shallow rectangular lot. Construction on 51 Ash Street should likely top out by early spring.
The property had historically served as storage site for boating and kayaking equipment, and previously housed several shipping containers along the eastern end of the plot.
There are no official renderings of 51 Ash Street except for the elevation diagram depicting the eastern profile. The first three floors feature a brick façade with columns extending to the flat roof parapet. The fourth and fifth floors are clad in floor-to-ceiling glass and metal paneling, and two mechanical bulkheads rise above the rooftop, which features a glass railing. An outdoor terrace is positioned on the third story of the rear northern side with a two-story cantilever directly above.
51 Ash Street has a completion date posted on site for this summer, though sometime in the latter half of 2023 is more realistic.
