Construction is progressing on the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Center For Surgical Innovation (CCSI), an 11-story building at 432 West 58th Street in Hell’s Kitchen. The project involves the renovation and modernization of the 52-year-old, 172,000-square-foot structure, which the hospital purchased back from the Italian school La’Scuola d’Italia for $75.1 million in 2018 three years after parting with it for $55 million. Lendlease is the general contractor for the project, which is being carried out with the help of an $11.6 million grant from the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). The property is located between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, directly across 58th Street from the hospital’s main campus.

Recent photos show the structure stripped of its mid-century façade of earth-toned cementitious paneling, leaving the steel superstructure on the main northern elevation exposed. The rendering shows the new curtain wall composed of modern glass paneling arranged in a grid of 16 large rectangles spanning two stories each. A triangular canopy will extend over the sidewalk and ground-floor frontage.

The below photos from the summer of 2021 detail the rather slow pace of progress. The only major changes since then are the removal of the façade framework on the main elevation and the reapplication of fireproofing to the steel framework.

As stated on Mount Sinai’s website, the CCSI will aim to facilitate the development and commercialization of innovative technologies and instrumentation to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency of surgical procedures. The goal is to improve outcomes among patients in New York City and globally by developing surgical technology and training researchers, engineers, and physicians.

A former completion date of fall 2020 is posted on site. A revised timetable has yet to be announced.

  1. Beyond the major renovation of the Mount Sinai building, I’m curious about the “vacant lot” on the right?

Are there plans/proposals for that site… perhaps another
    MEGAGIGA SUPERTALL by Extell? 🤔
