The Municipal Art Society of New York has received a $200,000 grant from The New York Community Trust to support historic preservation projects in local neighborhoods. Known as the Enduring Culture Initiative, the program aims to widely distribute the benefits of historic preservation at sites and neighborhoods with unique character and cultural significance.
The Enduring Culture Initiative will be guided by an advisory committee and community-based partner organizations. To get started, the committee will complete a comprehensive phase of research and data analysis to inform the program’s future efforts.
The goal is to look beyond architectural integrity and also include public artworks, urban gardens, community anchors like local businesses, and other community-defining attributes.
“As New York City continues to grow and develop in new and exciting ways, so too must our approach to protecting and preserving our city’s history, culture, and unique sense of place.” said Elizabeth Goldstein, president of the Municipal Art Society of New York. “So many of the vibrant communities in our city have not been previously represented in preservation efforts. Our Enduring Culture program will help ensure that everyone has a seat at the table to advocate for their own corner of our city, and that diverse perspectives are represented in our programming.”
Today, the Municipal Art Society is asking New Yorkers to fill out a brief, four-minute survey to describe the culture and character of their neighborhood. The project will culminate in an advocacy campaign to document history, elevate neighborhood voices, and create new policies and programs that recognize and protect valuable community institutions.
The Enduring Culture Initiative will also be supported by a grant from the late J.M. Kaplan Fund.
