Nationwide construction company Suffolk has announced the formation of Suffolk Sustainability Group, underscoring the company’s ambition to lead the nation in sustainable practices across the entire building lifecycle. To spearhead this effort, Suffolk has appointed Steven Burke as senior director of sustainability and Michael Swenson as director of sustainability for Suffolk Design, the contractor’s design-assist business unit.

The growing demand for sustainable development among clients and Suffolk’s dedication to positively impacting communities and the environment have heightened the company’s focus on sustainable building. The newly formed Sustainability Group, led by Suffolk executive vice president Nick Dhimitri, will enhance the company’s internal expertise and bolster its capacity to offer a broad spectrum of green building solutions. Suffolk plans to utilize its sustainability planning processes, design support, advanced technologies, and data analytics to expand technical services and identify cost-effective sustainable solutions for its clients.

Steven Burke brings a wealth of experience in leading sustainability strategies, having co-founded the Sustainable Construction Leaders network and created the Contractor’s Commitment. Michael Swenson, in his role at Suffolk Design, has previously spearheaded interdisciplinary teams focusing on sustainability and commissioning projects, including decarbonization master planning and building performance analysis to meet energy and carbon goals.

Suffolk is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is ranked number nine on the Engineering News-Record magazine’s “Top 100 Green Building Contractors” list for 2023. The company has completed over $15 billion and more than 60 million square feet of projects that meet third-party green building certification standards.

“Sustainable building is critical for the environment, for our clients and for the future,” said John Fish, chairman and CEO of Suffolk. “Launching our Sustainability Team and hiring experienced leaders in the sustainability space demonstrate our strong commitment to strengthening our leadership position in the green building space and delivering the most sophisticated green buildings that will raise the bar for contractors throughout America.”

I hope contractors will like and embrace green buildings, on intention of the working group: Thanks.

  2. Congratulations to Suffolk Construction. I pine for the day when industry leaders will not have to make sustainable construction means and methods as a distinguishing practice and capability with its universal application .
