New York City Mayor Eric Adams and senior administration officials recently celebrated the groundbreaking for the Marlboro Agricultural Education Center at 2800 86th Street in Gravesend, Brooklyn. The 9,900-square-foot center was designed by Studio Gang Architects and is being built by Consigli Construction Company, Inc. It is expected to cost approximately $18.2 million to build and will be completed in 2025.

The center plans to feature a rooftop greenhouse supporting fish and plant cultivation, along with an indoor market, a teaching kitchen, and a multipurpose room that will be used for community programming and job training. Educational programming will be provided through partnerships with community schools, camps, non-profits, and The Campaign Against Hunger’s ” Green Teens” internship and certificate programs.

When complete, the Marlboro Agricultural Education Center will meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold standards and be elevated to address its location within a coastal flood zone. The project utilizes the Design-Build method, which is expected to result in a significantly shorter construction timeline than is typical for a project of this scope.

“A major part of this administration’s housing blueprint is ensuring all New Yorkers have healthy and sustainable food systems,” said Maria Torres-Springer, deputy mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce. “NYCHA’s Marlboro Agriculture Education Center helps fulfill this vision, and is a model of how we can bring healthy food resources to communities as quickly as possible.”
