The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) recently released a list of its key achievements from 2024, focusing specifically on accomplishments that advanced equity and inclusion, improved agency efficiency, and addressed climate resilience. As part of its Equity Framework, the LPC prioritized designations that reflect New York City’s diverse history, including landmarks tied to Black history such as Manhattan’s Jacob Day Residence and Staten Island’s Frederick Douglass Memorial Park. Additionally, the organization designated the Willoughby-Hart Historic District in Bedford-Stuyvesant and several new sites in The Bronx.

A highlight for the year was the launch of Portico, LPC’s new permit application portal, which has streamlined the permitting process for building owners. The platform simplifies applications, provides detailed status updates, and has significantly increased the number of expedited permit approvals, particularly through the Business Express Service. LPC also collaborated with NYC DOT to streamline guidelines for the Dining Out NYC program, allowing small businesses in historic districts to participate in outdoor dining while preserving the city’s historic character.

In sustainability efforts, the LPC introduced the Climate Resiliency Initiative, focusing on protecting waterfront historic resources from climate-related threats. Supported by a $500,000 FEMA grant, the initiative enhanced hazard mitigation planning and enables faster response to weather-related emergencies.

“Historic preservation has a critical role to play as our city continues to evolve to meet the needs of New Yorkers,” said Landmarks Preservation Commission chair Sarah Carroll. “Over the past year, the Commission has delivered on its mission to protect and preserve New York City’s historic resources while looking to the future, ensuring that the values of equity and inclusion are reflected across all aspects of the agency’s work, designating new landmark sites that tell the story of all New Yorkers, supporting our city’s economic growth, and launching new initiatives to transform LPC’s permitting process and help strengthen our city’s climate resiliency for future generations to come.”

  1. That building looks familiar, can anyone tell me where it’s located. Thank You. Happy New Year

  2. I wish they would landmark more districts of large apartment buildings, the type that are routinely mutilated by Local Law 11
