The Northern Tower Wraps Up Construction At 35-32 Leavitt Strteet in Flushing, Queens

Construction is coming to a close on the Northern Tower, a 13-story hotel and residential building at 35-32 Leavitt Street in Flushing, Queens. Designed by Raymond Chan Architect and developed by Century Development Group, which signed an agreement in late 2016 with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, the 152-foot-tall mixed-use structure will span 228,000 square feet, with around 101,000 square feet for a 244-room Westin hotel, 2,270 square feet for community facility use, and 42,100 square feet of residential space. The residential component comprise 49 condominium units on the top three floors. The property is alternately addressed as 137-61 Northern Boulevard and located at the corner of Northern Boulevard and Leavitt Street.

Recent photographs show the building fully clad in its exterior of floor-to-ceiling glass and white and earth-toned paneling. Numerous setbacks across the multifaceted massing are lined with glass railings for terraces, and the building culminates in a flat parapet. Westin branding is displayed at two locations on the lower stories facing Northern Boulevard. Some finishing touches are wrapping up on the interiors, and barriers continue to block off the ground floor from the sidewalk and the porte-cochere along the eastern end of the property from the street.

The property was formerly occupied by a one-story supermarket and surface-level parking lot, as seen in the following Google Street View image from before demolition began.

The development features 64 vehicle parking spots and 40 bicycle parking spaces. Hotel guests will have access to a swimming pool, fitness center, ballroom, shared laundry room, valet parking, storage space, and conference rooms. The Westin is expected to be the only five-star hotel in all of Queens.

In 2022, the developer secured a $65.7 million construction loan, which was supplied by Maxim Capital. The nearest subway is the 7 train at the Flushing-Main Street station to the south along Roosevelt Avenue.

YIMBY anticipates The Northern Tower will open sometime this spring.

The site was formerly a Sears and a small appliance store, then the Great Wall Supermarket with parking lot. The Westin is said be the first 5-star hotel in Flushing. It was originally envisioned as being completed last year. The building curves back from the sidewalk at its western end in deference to the adjacent 1862 Flushing Town Hall.

Quiet and private with glass covering, even if there are big bikes making loud noises that can be annoying: Thanks.

  4. Really should’ve just gone with the white paneling for the whole facade, or two-tone white and glass, instead of this jumble of exteriors. Better than a parking lot (arguably, lol), but that’s not saying much.
