Permits have been filed for the Manhattan Detention Center, a 16-story jail building with community facility and retail space at 125 White Street in Chinatown, Manhattan. Located between Lafayette Street and Centre Street, the lot is near the Canal Street subway station, served by the 6, J, N, and Q trains. Eduardo del Valle of NYC Department of Design and Construction is listed as the owner behind the applications.
The proposed 353-foot-tall development will yield 1,053,671 square feet. The steel-based structure will also have a cellar, three commercial loading berths, and 125 enclosed parking spaces.
Eric Van Epps of HOK is listed as the architect of record.
An estimated completion date has not been announced.

Lawd have mercy.
Might as well build a casino on top of it. 16 stories is too small a building .
Except 353 foot tall is the height of a 35 floor building
The jail levels will likely have a duplex layout like you see on TV. Each “floor” is likely to be nearly 20 feet.
Where do the Pickleball courts go?
..but seriously, no matter how enlightened the design of this new ‘detention center, it will quickly be referred to as the next iteration of ‘the Tombs’
Next to the affordable units.
Um, this article fails to mention that this jail will be , per sq ft. , the most expensive building to be built in the history of the United States, followed only by the Brooklyn jail. And Tutor Perini has 50% of all jail contracts in NYC, an out of state firm. Approx $3400/ ft to estimates as high as $5,400/ ft. this is 3x the freedom tower cost, and 3x the JP Morgan Chase building in midtown.
lol wow that’s more expensive than the super high end luxury condo building at 80 Clarkson. What a joke.
Oh yay, retail space at the jail! Now that’s where everyone is itching to go shopping!😂🤣
Tourists like NYC items, some with police or firemen motifs. I can imagine Chinatown tourists stopping by to pick up Dept. of Corrections items.
Probably most here know the history, but if not, the Tombs was an Egyptian Revival style prison. It was a lost landmark like the old Penn Station. I miss the old Women’s House of Detention by the Jefferson Market Courthouse. The women would yell down to the street, often in bawdy tones. People would gather to enjoy the show.
