Hudson Valley Shakespeare has officially opened the new Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center in Garrison, New York, marking the completion of a transformative six-year capital project that establishes the acclaimed theater company’s first permanent home. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on May 14, welcomed civic leaders, project partners, artists, and supporters to the newly completed 98-acre campus overlooking the Hudson Highlands.
The project delivers a purpose-built open-air theater and cultural campus designed by Studio Gang in collaboration with landscape architects Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects. Construction was led by Consigli Construction Company.
The new 6,800-square-foot, 451-seat theater is framed by a sweeping curved mass-timber grid shell that opens toward panoramic views of the Hudson River and surrounding highlands. The project also includes approximately 10,000 square feet of backstage, administrative, and visitor support space, including dressing rooms, wardrobe facilities, concessions, and public amenities.
The theater’s architecture is designed to blur the line between indoor and outdoor performance environments, reinforcing the company’s decades-long identity as an open-air Shakespeare festival. The proscenium directly frames the natural landscape beyond the stage, continuing a visual tradition audiences experienced during the company’s years performing under a seasonal tent at Boscobel House and Gardens.
Landscape improvements across the site prioritize ecological restoration and public accessibility. Nelson Byrd Woltz’s master plan introduces fourteen acres of new native plantings, restored meadows and wetlands, accessible walking paths, and expanded public gathering areas overlooking the Hudson River. The arrival sequence was conceived as a gradual immersion into the landscape before audiences reach the theater itself.
Sustainability measures incorporates into the new design include low-carbon mass timber construction, rooftop solar arrays, rainwater harvesting systems, and habitat restoration initiatives intended to support biodiversity throughout the property. Hudson Valley Shakespeare expects the project to achieve LEED Platinum certification, which would make it the first purpose-built open-air theater in the United States to receive the designation. The organization has also committed to achieving carbon neutrality across the campus by 2040.
The development received approximately $19.5 million in combined federal and state funding, including a $10 million cultural capital grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, one of the largest grants ever awarded by the agency. Additional support came from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Empire State Development, the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council, and the New York State Department of Education.
Hudson Valley Shakespeare’s inaugural season in the new theater begins June 10 and will feature productions of As You Like It, King Lear, and Les Misérables.
